Company Background
In 1949 Alec K. Gianaras founded Transformer
Manufacturers, Inc. to begin manufacturing his own line of transformers. A well
respected salesman for Standard Transformer Company in Chicago, Illinois, Alec felt there
was room for one more transformer company in the growing market.
The company originally started on Weed Street near
Halsted Street, then moved to 5435 Northwest Highway, and in 1962 settled in its current
location at 7051 West Wilson Avenue, Norridge.
In response to a growing demand, Robinson Transformer
Corp. was started in August of 1959 to give TMI more capacity. Originally located in a
garage in the southern Illinois town of Robinson, the company moved to its current 20,000
square foot building in 1966.
Today, the company operates under one name,
Transformer Manufacturers, Inc., which includes its two manufacturing facilities.
Alexander A. Gianaras, son of the founder, is President. Alex "grew up" in the
transformer business, working closely with his father and gaining over 20 years of
experience. Under Alex's charge, the company has continued to expand its product lines and
meet today's demanding quality and delivery standards.
Until the early 1970's TMI focused on the radio and
television industry, which was concentrated in Chicago. Admiral, Zenith (and other
companies) were all headquartered here in Chicago. As the industry changed, TMI reacted
quickly and today supplies transformers, chokes, and toroids for products in the audio,
computer, control, food service equipment, lighting, medical, power conditioners, and
telecommunications industries.
TMI makes small appliance-type, dry-type, magnetics.
Generally speaking, the magnetics are under 30kva, and are single or 3-phase type
transformers. The products are custom designed by TMI engineers to meet the specifications
of our customers. All of our transformers are made here in the U.S.A.
Our customers' requirements vary and TMI has dedicated
itself to meeting or exceeding our customers' demands. While our products are custom
designed and manufactured, TMI makes as many or even as few transformers as are
currently required and scheduled by our customers.
Whether you call this philosophy Just-In-Time (JIT) or
Supply Chain Management, at TMI, we just want to satisfy your manufacturing requirements.
You'll agree our transformers and our service can do just that.
